The Comptroller-General of Customs, Col. Hameed Ali (rtd), says he will not be honouring the invitation of the Senate tomorrow Wednesday March 22nd.

Ali was asked to reappear before the senate tomorrow after he failed to appear the house last Thursday in his uniform.

Speaking to state house correspondents after a meeting with resident Buhari today, Ali said he had a court case to attend to tomorrow and so would not be available to appear before the senate.

A lawyer identified as Mohammed Ibrahim, had filed a suit at the Abuja Division of the Fedral High Court against the Customs boss over his refusal to wear the Customs uniform.

“The case is in court already. Somebody has sued us. I have gotten my writ of summons and they said status quo ante should remain; which means nothing should be done until the court makes a pronouncement. A private individual sued all of us; he wants an interpretation of the section that is in contention. I don’t want to talk so that I am not held in contempt of court’’Ali said

The Benue State Commissioner of Police, Bashir Makama has faulted the order by Governor Samuel Ortom to evacuate herdsmen from Buruku local council in the state.
The governor on Monday during a visit to Buruku to ascertain the level of destruction ordered security agencies in the state to immediately evacuate armed herdsmen from the area.
But Makama in an interview with journalists yesterday in Makurdi faulted the directive by the governor. He said nobody has the right to banish anyone from any part of the country.
Makama explained that the constitution permits everyone to reside anywhere in the country. “The herdsmen should have been advised to leave. And if they discover that the people are not receptive to them, they would have left quietly rather than push them out. The state belongs to all Nigerians,” the CP maintained.
He assured that the police would do everything to protect lives and property in the area.

Nigeria’s Federal Government has clearly spelt out the irresistible benefits that await whistleblowers as it also pledges protection for them, as there are some controversies that some whistle blowers have been victimized.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said any whistle-blower whose information leads to the recovery of up to 1 billion Naira will receive 5 per cent of the amount.

“For those who may have suffered any backlash as a result of the information they provide, their cases will be reviewed and appropriate mitigating actions taken”

“Whistle-blowers have nothing to fear, because the committee has put in place the necessary measures to safeguard those who give useful information. As a matter of fact, whistle-blowers have everything to gain and nothing to lose,” he said.

How much you can make by being a whistleblower:

1. Recovery of up to 1 billion Naira will receive 5% of the amount;

2. The reward for any amount between 1 and 5 billion Naira will be 5% for the first 1 billion Naira and 4% of the remaining 4 billion Naira

3. And then for any whistleblowing amount of over 5 billion Naira will attract 2.5% reward.

4. For example, if a whistle-blower provides information leading to the recovery of 10 billion Naira, he or she will receive 5% of the first 1 billion Naira, 4% of the next 4 billion Naira and 2.5% of the remaining 5 billion Naira.

We were all sitting together that fateful night before he left to watch football match and I also left the hotel premises by 11pm, to go and sleep. It was around 12am that I recieved a phone call from one of the boys in the hotel, crying, that my hotel was on fire.
Before I could get to the hotel, the flame was everywhere; and it took the efforts of the Federal Fire Service to prevent the inferno from escalating to the surrounding houses” he said Another account given by his friend and his direct neighbour at the hotel, Ohize Yakubu, who has been living in the hotel apartment since the day of his wedding in 2013; said the deceased ran back into the fire when they tried to rescue him.
“We went to watch Arsenal and Bayern match that night, I came back to the hotel and Dr. Isaac came in 5 minutes later. After some minutes, I started hearing strange sound from his room, which is directly opposite my room.
At first, I was scared to open door, because I didn’t know if it was a robbery attack, until I heard and recognised the voice of one of our neighbours, beckoning on Dr. Isaac to open door and come out, shouting fire, fire.
At this point, everyone ran back as the inferno had started escalating and all my belongings got burnt. My wife only escaped with my son. I was engaged in the process of rescuing Dr. Isaac, and lost all my belongings in the process”he said.
As at the time this news broke,no one could explain in clear terms, what might have gone wrong with the deceased, to have warranted him taking his own life. Even though his remains has been deposited at the Asokoro General Hospital by the Police, but the family members are yet to arrive Abuja.

Justice Binta Nyako of an Abuja Federal High Court, has barred journalists covering the ongoing trial of the leader of the Indigenous People Of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu from using their phones and cameras.
The order was handed down to reporters at the entrance of the courtroom by an operative of the Department of State Security, DSS, who was in company of three heavily armed prisons officials.
According to the operative, “Madam (the judge) gave the order; she said no journalists should be allowed inside with their phones and their cameras.”
What is not clear is if the operative was acting on his own volition or on the orders of the trial judge.
At the last hearing on the matter, men of the Nigeria Police Force had prevented IPOB members and some journalists from gaining entrance into the premises of the court to witness the trial of Kanu.

President Muhammadu Buhari has reaffirmed his support to universities and other tertiary institutions to enable them produce the necessary skilled manpower.
The president made the declaration at the 33rd convocation ceremony of Bayero University, Kano (BUK) where he was represented by the Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Adamu Rasheed, Guardian writes.\
Calling on varsities to rise up to their responsibilities by providing the needed skilled manpower to meet the current global challenges, Buhari maintained that government would do its part in ensuring that the Nigerian project is actualized.
“We shall continue to sacrifice our time and energy as well as to ensure fairness, integrity and dedication in order to change the fortunes of our country,’’ he said.
“Government will continue to monitor developments in the universities to ensure that they are developed, respect good governance and rule of law.”
He thanked Nigerians for their prayers while he was on medical vacation in the United Kingdom, while restating his administration’s commitment to the fight against corruption.
“We are encouraged by the prayers to change the country. We shall continue to stand firmly to fight corruption and improve security for the development of the country, “he said.
The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Muhammad Yahuza, said that no fewer than 8, 634 graduands were awarded various degrees and post graduates diplomas, with a total of 52 first class graduates recorded.
Meanwhile, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) said universities were faced with imminent closure following lack of prompt payment of staff salaries by the government.
This was disclosed in a news conference in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, titled, ‘Shortfall and drawback of university staff salaries’, where the Port Harcourt zone of the union lamented the neglect of lecturers by their employers.
Speaking at the conference, the Zonal Coordinator, ASUU, Prof. Beke Sese, described the idea of withholding university staff salaries while establishing new universities at the same time as the height of irresponsibility and wickedness, stating that lecturers would no longer continue to endure the situations against the backdrop of current economic hardship.
“Our members are being compelled by the actions and inactions of government to contemplate the hard decision of withdrawing our services,” he said.
Following their refusal to pay a certain restitution fee, over a thousand students of FUT Minna have reportedly forfeited their student status.
The Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State, Prof. Maubau Akanji, has said that over 1,000 students of the institution have forfeited their student status.
In a chat with Saturday PUNCH, the VC said that the students’ recent protest, which led to the destruction of the university’s clinic, and their refusal to pay N4,950 restitution fee, came as a surprise to the school’s management.
According to him, out of 16,000 students, 14,000 had paid while some were officially out of campus during the period.
He said, “Students who do not pay will not be allowed to continue the semester. It means that they have voluntarily withdrawn their student status.
“The restitution fee was implemented because students were the ones who destroyed the properties and they should be the ones to pay for them.”
Akanji said that properties worth over N59m were damaged while drugs valued at N3.5m were burnt during the incident.
Meanwhile, the Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria, Niger State chapter, has called on the government to increase the 2017 health budget in the state.
The call follows the rising cases of deaths among children, which are believed to be caused by pneumonia and diarrhoea.
Leader of the association, Dr. Halima Shehu, who spoke on behalf of the group on Friday said adequate funding should be made available to the health sector to guarantee the purchase of drugs needed to fight the dreaded diseases.
The state Commissioner for Health, Mohammed Nda, said as one of its key priorities, the present administration would ensure the timely release of funds to address all issues related to health in the state.

A distraught young lady has written to a prominent counsellor, Temilolu Okeowo how a rape incident by a family member has caused her to go into prostitution.

She wrote:

Dear Aunty Temilolu,

One fateful day, when everyone had gone to work, my uncle (my mum’s younger brother), came to the bathroom where I was taking my bath, flung himself at me and raped me.

I fainted out of shock and was revived. Some weeks later, I discovered I was pregnant and was forced to terminate the pregnancy.

To worsen my plight, till date, my parents and entire family refuse to believe my uncle raped me as he denied it. I’ve been treated with so much disdain because according to them, I want to disorganise the family while my uncle goes scot-free.

My mother in particular has made life so unbearable for me, I feel so worthless, hopeless and useless.

I took solace in my friend who encouraged me to join their group of prostitutes. I graduated from secondary school at age 14. I was a brilliant child.

However, today, I am a s*x worker to make ends meet after being neglected by my parents. I am traumatised and depressed and I need to see you before I do something silly to myself. Where may I find you please?

Queen.

Queen letter was given a reponse in th following write-up:

My darling, precious, glorious, dignified, world-famous and heavenly celebrated Nigerian sisters,

Please pardon me for skipping the topic I began discussing last week. Queen’s story made me so angry such that I wish I could hold a world press conference right away on our satanically and unapologetically patriarchal society and get the world to save the future of Nigerian girls who will be responsible for future Nigeria! Abi, are they not the ones to bring an entire generation into the world if their wombs remain intact? I hear all sorts of stories every day of the evils that men do especially to the girl-child.

It’s so disturbing that it’s giving me grey hair already.

Why should anyone go through what Queen is dealing with? What baffles me is how her mother of all people would malign her because of her younger brother.

You could say her brother has been her benefactor however, that is not a reason for her to defend him in a situation like this.

If care is not taken, Queen’s life is just going to spiral down into complete darkness. Already, she has become a sex worker whose body is a merchandise for these same men.

She may never ever get her bearing right. A child who left high school in flying colours at age 14 is one who certainly loves to study and make the most of her brain. What happens to this intellectual gusto?

Now, I imagine Queen’s daily activity, I imagine how her great dreams for a beautiful future are being snuffed out daily. I imagine how she doesn’t want to know what anyone could think about her trade.

I imagine how lost she is in the wilderness of life; I imagine how she cries morning, day and night.

I even imagine how she wants to peel off her body when she showers after sleeping with these men-all because her family refused to treat her with love or even care for her needs.

Yes, we can all wonder why she has to join the sex work; after all there should be another way out.

I tell you, you will be shocked at the number of young ladies around you, who are sleeping with one man or the other to make ends meet.

They don’t have to stand on the road at night. But why should things keep getting worse for the younger female folk? They are the ones who are sexually abused right from childhood even before they reach puberty.

Before long, they begin to fall in love and when not prepared for that stage, have their hearts fatally broken over and over and over again. T

hey get to the university and some beastly men the father’s age make life hellish for them and I tell you most of these girls succumb.

Senate President Bukola Saraki has said the Senate did not reject the acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr. Ibrahim Magu, because of a damning report issued by the Department of State Services which questioned Magu’s integrity.

Saraki said this in an interview with TVC News in Morocco where he attended an African summit on climate change and food security.
The Senate President was reacting to a claim by a former Senate Majority Leader, Ali Ndume, who said last week that it was hypocritical of the Senate to allow Saraki to continue in office because he was in court to defend corruption allegations.

Ndume had argued that the Senate should not have rejected Magu based on unproven allegations.
Saraki said,

“You are jumping into conclusion that he (Magu) was rejected because of the accusation. I don’t think there was anywhere we said he was rejected based on accusations.

“We have nominees that come all the time with different issues. Two weeks ago, we screened the Chief Justice of Nigeria and he scaled through.“Now the EFCC chairman came and he did not pass the screening. Someone else will come and may pass. This is our constitutional role and I don’t think we should personalise or politicise this.”

The Senate President also denied reports that the current face-off between the Senate and the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Col. Hameed Ali (retd.), was evidence that the Senate was being too harsh on the executive.

He said the executive arm of government must learn to consult with the legislature more often as this, according to him, is the best way to get things done.
Saraki added,

“I know that as the parliament, which represents the people, some of these far-reaching decisions have to be made and there is a need for a wider consultation and that is what democracy is about. If you don’t want democracy, you can sit in your office and announce anything.“Nobody is saying we have a monopoly of what is right but there must be consultation. We get feelers from the people and at a time that the economy is biting, we have to be very sensitive to some of the issues we face. So, all we are saying is consult more.

A court has arraigned three siblings who had allegedly assaulted a deputy superintendent of police.

Three siblings and one of their father’s workers have been charged before an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court, Lagos, for assaulting a police officer, Nnamdi James, (a Deputy Superintendent of Police), Punch reports.
The accused – Gbolahan Ayeni (21) and his two siblings – Igbayilola (24), Omotoyosi (18) and the other defendant, Agbede Beauty (26) allegedly assaulted James in collusion with others now at large on March 15, 2017, at about 11.30pm, while the officer was on duty at Abiola Market along the Oba Akran Road, Agege.
The officer is said to be attached to the Isokoko Police Station.
The charge against the accused read in part, “That you, Gbolahan, Igbayilola and Omotoyosi Ayeni and Agbede Beauty with others at large did conduct yourselves in a manner likely to cause beach of the peace.”
The accused were said to have committed offences punishable under sections 166, 171, 172, 348 and 409 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State Nigeria 2011.
The accused persons pleaded not guilty to five counts of unlawful assault on a police officer and breach of the peace. They were subsequently granted bail in the sum of N50,000 each and sureties in like sum.
Magistrate A. Adesanya, who presided over the case, granted the suspects bail and ordered that they present sureties.
The case was adjourned till May 16, 2017 for mention.

Although they are safe for consumption, Fanta and Sprite should not be used to take any medicine, the federal government has said.
The Minister of Health, Isaac Adewole, said the two beverages, manufactured by the Nigeria Bottling Company, NBC, are safe for human consumption but cannot be taken with any drug.
The minister stated these on Friday, after a meeting with the Department of Food and Drug Services, Federal Ministry of Health; National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC; and Standards Organisation of Nigeria, SON; to address the concerns raised over the drinks by a judgement of a Lagos High Court.
The Court had ordered NAFDAC to direct the Nigeria Bottling Company Plc to include a warning on the bottles of the products that the contents cannot be taken with Vitamin C.
The judgment was on a suit filed by a Lagos-based businessman, Emmanuel Adebo, against NBC Plc and NAFDAC.
In his suit, Mr Adebo urged the court to declare that NBC was negligent to its consumers by bottling Fanta and Sprite with excessive levels of benzoic acid and sunset additives.
He had tried to export Nigeria-produced Fanta and Sprite to the UK, where they were described as poisonous by authorities there and destroyed.

As of the time of publishing this post, the rapper has not made any comment on this wicked Mis-information.

Just recently, a Christian husband has just dragged his wife to a Sharia Court in Abuja, on the basis of her praying and worshiping God too much. Emeka Ugwuonye of the Due Process Advocates, who is the woman's lawyer, shared the post on Facebook on Thursday, March 16.

The copy of the Sharia Court paper
Read below:

"The third major case of the day today: The man that knocked off the teeth of his wife showed his true color. Fellow Advocates, today has been a terrible day for me. I actually had more battles than I have revealed to you. There was a third case. Remember the man in Abuja who beat his wife and knocked off three of her teeth. I told you he was being arraigned yesterday and we were asked to choose a court. That was moved to today. Just before he was to be taken to court, he went flat on his stomach and began to plead and beg his wife to have the mercy of the Lord Jesus Christ on him Everybody joined in begging the woman not to press on with the case. They even begged her to beg DPA. After all the begging, the woman agreed on the following conditions: (1) The man would be on probation for one year. He is not to touch his wife even once, otherwise this charge will be revived. He wrote an undertaking to that effect. (2) He will not yell at her or threaten her again. The man signed twice on every page. With the undertaken, everything seemed okay.

PAY ATTENTION: Get all the latest gossips on NAIJ Gossip App

The woman went home. And the man was released. But when she got home, she found out that the man had, unknown to her, filed a case against her in Sharia Court. Can you imagine? This man and his wife have been Christians from Imo State. Indeed, one of the things the man accused his wife of was that she was praying and worshiping God too much. Among the people the man called to beg his wife were Pastors and church people. But the man sued the woman in a Sharia Court. He wants them to impose Islamic judgement on his Christian wife. (I attached the summons from the Sharia Court so you will not think he is joking again). Now, I am defending this woman. We are her lawyers. But I know nothing about the Sharia law. I am determined to go to that court. So, please anyone who has a copy of the Koran and the Sharia code should help me. I will spend this weekend studying sharia law so that I can defend this lady in the sharia court. My first line of argument is that the sharia court lacks jurisdiction since this woman is born again Christian. Also, i will seek to revoke that man's probation. He signed it on bad faith and he breached the terms same day he signed it."

Paris - Security forces at Paris' Orly airport on Saturday shot dead a man who took a weapon from a soldier, the interior ministry said.
Witnesses said the airport was evacuated following the shooting at around 08:30.
The man fled into a shop at the airport before he was shot dead, an interior ministry spokesperson told AFP. He said there were no people were wounded in the incident.

The Higher Education National Convention in Midrand was cancelled after chaos erupted on Saturday when students dressed in EFF regalia refused to give Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande an opportunity to speak.
One student in a red EFF T-shirt told a convener: "What is he [Nzimande] going to say? He's not going to say anything we want to hear."
Programme directors ordered everyone out of the plenary tent as chairs and water bottles were thrown around and students starting getting violent with each other.
Nzimande is believed to have left the venue after his security team escorted him out of the tent.
Earlier the programme was suspended when conveners consulted student leaders on the best way forward.
AfriForum left the convention when students asked them to leave.
“The white people should leave,” some students shouted.
The EFF student command said they disrupted the convention because of their own interests.
“We collapsed the plenary for our own interests, because many people here aren’t here for our interests. We are participating and will continue to participate, but only on our terms,” Sharon Letlape from the EFF student command told News24.
The Young Communist League said the future of South African young people depends on the outcome of the convention.
“We are here to cement the call for free education for the poor. Because we believe education is not neutral from class conditions. Those who own the means of production must pay for higher education,” a representative said from the podium.
While students where protesting, former deputy chief justice Dikgang Moseneke pleaded with them to not disrupt the convention.
“We have invested an incredible amount of time in carefully negotiating with all stakeholders, in crafting a programme that is fully representative of all stakeholders, with the view to find common solutions to the current education crisis,” he said.
"The convention can no longer be meaningfully had. We regret that the deterioration of the situation is of such a level that we cannot continue. The minister who was our guest and who we wanted to hear had to leave in circumstances that were unacceptable.
"There are formations here who would've very much wanted to continue. I am personally deeply saddened, so too my co-convenors. We have no stake instead of advancing the interests of our youth, who are the future of our country. We are going to regroup and dialogue continues."
He said people could not shout each other down.
"We have a long difficult struggle ahead of us... We must struggle within the parameters of discipline and have a vision. Whether we like it or not, we have a government and we have to engage them."

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission today docked one Christian Efe Oyovweyho alias Femi Adesina before Justice Z.B Abubakar of the Federal High Court Kano on a two count charge of Obtaining by False Pretence.
The defendant allegedly impersonated the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to President Muhammad Buhari, Femi Adesina and attempted to obtain N300,000 from a professor of Economics at Bayero University Kano, Dalhatu Mohammed Galadanci.
According to the complainant, sometime in July 2016, the defendant sent him a text message claiming to be Femi Adesina, S.A to the president on Media and Publicity.
The defendant fraudulently claimed to be speaking on behalf of the president and that the name of the professor has been forwarded for appointment in the presidency.
The complainant further stated that the defendant claimed to be searching for a better office for him. Subsequently, the defendant asked the professor to make payment of the sum of N300,000 (Three Hundred Thousand Naira Only) to facilitate his appointment to Nigeria Port Authority or Nigerian Railway Cooperation and Rural Electrification.
At that point, the professor got suspicious and reported the matter to the commission.
One of the counts read that
“ You Christian Efe Oyovweyho alias Femi Adesina and another (now at large) on or about 16th day of July, 2016 at Kano, within the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court Kano with intent to defraud attempted to obtain the sum of N300,000 (Three Hundred Thousand Naira Only) from Professor Dalhatu Mohammed Galadanci through your Zenith Bank Account with Account number: 2173729401, under the false pretence that the money was meant for a juicy appointment in Abuja , which pretence you knew to be false and thereby committed an offense contrary to section 8 (b) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006 and punishable under section 1 (3) of the same Act.
After listening to the charge, the defendant pleaded not guilty.
Prosecution counsel Musa Isah requested a date for trial in view of the plea of defendant. Counsel representing the defendant, T.M Oyedema however brought a motion for bail, praying the court to admit his client to bail pending the hearing and determination of the case.
Justice Zainab granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 and two sureties in like sum. One of the sureties must be a State or Federal government official not below grade level 8.
The other surety must be a respected member of the society with a landed property within the jurisdiction. Also certificate of Occupancy in respect of the landed property shall be deposited with the Deputy Chief Registrar of the court.
The case has been adjourned till 11 April, 2017 for commencement of trial, while the defendant remains in prison custody pending the perfection of his bail conditions.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday directed the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, and the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, to immediately release the second tranche of the London-Paris Club loan refund to states.
He said the presidential order should be carried out “appropriately and with dispatch.”
The President, who returned to the country on Friday from his 49-day medical vacation, also turned down advice by state governors to take more rest.
Buhari said he would not take any further rest until he had addressed all issues affecting Nigerians.
According to a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the President spoke while addressing a meeting of the National Economic Council at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The council, which is made up of state governors, is chaired by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo.
Buhari, who had earlier released the first tranche of N388bn to the state governments in December 2016, said the latest release was meant to ease their financial hardship.
He stressed the need for the state governors to ensure the settlement of unpaid salaries and pension arrears of their workers with the funds.
“I will not rest until I address those issues that affect our people.
“One of these basic things is the issue of salaries. It is most important that workers are able to feed their families, pay rent and school fees, then other things can follow,” the President was quoted to have said.
He, however, thanked the governors for their display of “love and respect” for him.
Buhari said he was overwhelmed by his recent experience in which states, irrespective of political differences, charged their citizens to pray in mosques and churches for his well-being.
He apologised to the governors for barring them from visiting him while he was in London.
“I didn’t want government to move to London. I wanted it to remain here and I am glad it did,” he said.
After narrating what he went through while on that vacation, Buhari noted the suggestion by the governors for him to take more rest, but insisted that he would remain relentless in the pursuit of the interest of the Nigerian people at all times.
This, according to him, was the only way to show his gratitude to the people who, he said, “had given so much to me. I was overwhelmed by the celebration of my return all across the country.”
The Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum, Abdul-Aziz Yari of Zamfara State, assured the President, on behalf of his colleagues, that they would continue to support his policies and actions which they had adjudged as being in the nation’s best interest.
The governors of Imo, Akwa-Ibom, Osun and Abia states thanked the President for saving the day for the states through the first tranche of the London-Paris Club loan refunds.
They, however, called for the immediate release of the second one.
They also commended the trust the President reposed in Osinbajo, whom they said did not disappoint when he acted as President.
Buhari had arrived the venue of the meeting chaired by Osinbajo at about 12.30pm while it was already underway.
He went round the hall to shake hands with the state governors and deputy governors standing in for their governors one after the other.
The governors also presented the President with a “get-well” card which they all signed

New York - US stocks rose and the dollar fell Wednesday after the Federal Reserve hiked the key lending rate while signalling it still sees a gradual pace for additional increases.
Equities were also lifted by higher oil prices that boosted petroleum-linked equities, helping the S&P 500 notch a 0.8% gain.
Earlier, equity markets in Asia and Europe rose modestly.
The Fed, as expected, raised the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point. But the US central bank did not suggest it would speed up the pace of rate hikes as some experts had thought might happen.
"The simple message is the economy is doing well," said Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen at a news conference. "We have confidence in the robustness of the economy and its resilience to shocks."
Although Yellen has cautioned that Trump administration policies that boost the pace of economic growth could prompt the Fed to raise rates more quickly, she told reporters there is time to see how it plays out.
"We have not discussed in detail potential policy changes, that could be put into place, and we have not tried to map out what our response would be to particular policy measures," Yellen said about Trump's planned tax cuts and infrastructure spending.
Briefing.com analyst Patrick O'Hare said Yellen "sounded much more confident" compared with the prior two rate hikes instituted on her watch.
"The market is awakening to the fact that it can tolerate rising interest rates as long as it's going up for the right reason," O'Hare said.
In its quarterly economic projections, the central bankers still see the federal funds rate rising to 1.4% by the end of the year, which would imply another two increases, unchanged from the previous forecast.
Some analysts had thought the Fed might boost the number to three more rate hikes this year.
But the expectation of a gradual pace to additional rate hikes weighed on the dollar.
"Some investors may have expected a slightly more hawkish tone to the Fed's language given the tone of some of the recent commentary from the Fed," said Omer Esiner, chief market analyst at Commonwealth Foreign Exchange.
Oil prices rally
Oil prices rebounded after the US Energy Department reported a decline in oil inventories and after the International Energy Agency said in its latest monthly report that Opec crude producing nations were complying with a landmark deal to curb a global supply glut.
The market had dipped on Tuesday after data emerged showing key producer Saudi Arabia increased production last month, raising questions about the Opec cartel's reduction commitment, just as US shale output expands.

Cape Town – President Jacob Zuma denied any knowledge of allegations of the ANC’s reported involvement in the Swifambo tender for the procurement of locomotives by the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa).

Zuma was responding to questions in the National Assembly when DA leader Mmusi Maimane asked him in a follow-up question whether the ANC received a “bribe of R80m” to award the procurement of the controversial Afro4000 locomotive to Swifambo Rail Leasing.

News24 earlier reported that the Swifambo paid an amount of R14.3m into the account of a lawyer who had introduced himself as a fundraiser for the ANC.

This transaction by Auswell Mashaba, MD of the Swifambo Rail Leasing, would be the first of several payments totalling R80m that were made by Mashaba to George Sabelo, the ANC-linked lawyer, and Maria Gomes, an Angolan citizen who calls herself a friend of Zuma.

“As ANC president, I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Zuma said in response to Maimane’s question.
“The allegations need to be investigated. I know Prasa has done its own internal investigations on the allegations, but I have no idea how far they are.”

Maimane put it to Zuma that Popo Molefe former chairperson of the now dissolved Prasa board, stated under oath that the ANC, as well as certain Prasa officials were the recipients of the said bribe.

The DA leader also wanted to know from Zuma if he instructed ANC MPs who are members of the portfolio committee on transport to make a U-turn on a promised inquiry into the disarray at Prasa.

Zuma said there are already a number of investigations involving Prasa and that he doubted it would be wise to conduct “an inquiry on top of investigations”.

“Would that be the correct thing to do before the outcome of the investigations?” Zuma asked. “We can only decide on the need for the inquiry once the investigations are completed. One of the things is the investigation could go to court. So you may not have the need for any in
Prasa has been mired in controversy, following allegations of tender irregularities, wasteful expenditure and management problems at company and board level.

Collins Letsoalo, Prasa acting CEO was recently fired by the board, following allegations that he hiked his salary by more than 350%. Transport Minister Dipuo Peters dissolved the board shortly thereafter.

An interim board has since been established, chaired by former SA National Roads Agency boss Nazir Ali was an experienced manager and former General-Secretary of the National Union of Mineworkers‚ Frans Baleni‚ and Xolile George from the SA Local Government Association (Salga).

Meanwhile the former board members have lodged an urgent application in the High Court in Pretoria on Monday to reverse their removal by Peters.

The former board argued that the disbandment could create the perception that the transport minister is seeking to prevent investigations into corruption‚ which is ongoing, and that she is “punishing the board” for its decision to axe Letsoalo.

The order was given by the governor on Monday in Tombo-Mbalagh during a visit to ascertain the casualties and damage inflicted on the community by herdsmen.
Ortom’s visit is coming on the back of the recent attacks on the community by the cattle rustlers during the weekend.
Speaking on the attacks, the Sole Administrator for the council area, Mrs Justina Sorkaa, said eight bodies have been recovered, while three persons are missing.
Sorkaa’s account was contradicted by the state police commissioner, Bashir Makama, who insisted that six persons died in the attack.
Ortom said that he had directed security agencies as a matter of urgency to lead herdsmen out of the area for peace to reign.
He said the herdsmen must leave since they were not welcomed by the unarmed inhabitants of the area.
It is understood that majority of the resident in the state were disarmed through the amnesty programme executed by the Ortom administration in 2015.
”Some of the displaced persons have moved in with their relations in Buruku town and those who do not have anywhere to go are with us in an improvised IDP camp here at St Peter’s Anglican Primary School, Imenger,”the Sole Administrator, Mrs Justina Sorkaa said
